We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration. The aim isn't to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal.

Part of the conversation: How builders are adapting to coding agents

@TimSweeneyEpic says Epic is moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration, aiming to build more and better stuff rather than the same stuff with fewer people. @thdxr (13.4K likes) says models improve faster than the tinkerers, so custom workflows often address problems that no longer exist, and someone naively using vanilla codex is more likely to see state of the art. @trq212 says working at a higher abstraction level still requires understanding the lower ones.

Why it mattersPractitioners disagree on how much hand-built tooling and low-level knowledge still matter as agents improve.

a weird inversion with LLMs is the models improve faster than the tinkerers when i see people with custom workflows and setups they're all addressing problems that don't exist anymore the person naively using vanilla codex is more likely to be experiencing state of the art

working at a higher level of abstraction has always required understanding the lower level ones, I don't think coding agents changes this
